Tomb of Minh Mang is located 12km from the city of Hue. This tomb was started constructing in September 1840 under the order of Kinh Minh Mang. While the tomb had been building, the King was sick and passed away in 1841. King Thieu Tri continued the task according to his father’s plan. And it was completed in 1843.
Visiting Minh Mang’s tomb, tourists was impressed by the majesty and symmetry of the architectural constructions. It is recommended sightseeing by its monuments, statues, gardens and especially the bridge over a lake of lotus flowers, which lead to the Imperial Minh Mang tomb. Minh Mang Tomb comprises 40 structures including gates, palaces, temples, pavilions, altars, yards, statues, etc. The main entrance to the tomb is Dai Hong Mon with 24 heaving roofs covered with beautiful decorations. The Dai Hong Mon Gate has three openings- a right, left side and a central opening. Tourists can enter both right and left side but not through the central opening. This one only opens for King and had been tightly closed until now.
From Dai Hong Mon Date, tourists have to walk half a kilometers to reach the Honour Courtyard with a traditional double row of mandarins, soldiers, elephants, horses, and statues. Bi Dinh (Stele Pavilion) is on Mount Phung Than containing the ‘ Thanh Duc Than Cong” stele, inscribed with the Emperor’s biography and merits, written by his son-Thieu Tri. Through the Stele Pavilion, you will find Hien Duc Gate leads to Sung An Temple where both the Emperor and Queen Ta Thien Nhan are worshipped. Then crossing the Lake of impeccable Clarity and Hoang Trach Mon( gate) lead to the Bright Pavilion( Minh Lau)- a square pavilion with two storeys and eight roofs.
The new moon lake embraces the circular Buu Thanh. There are three bridges crossing the new lake. Tourists must climb 33 stones steps to reach the tomb. You can see the poems in the Stele Pavilion, Hien Duc gate, Sung An Temple and Minh Pavilion of Vietnam’s early 19th Century.
